The challenge
Rising cloud costs threatened to hinder growth
The move to AWS in 2013 had helped Colect expand the platform further. As usage increased, so did the costs.
Although Colect was already using Compute Savings Plans, the AWS bill remained a significant expense for the organization. This raised the question: How can you get more out of your existing AWS environment without having to invest immediately in a costly migration to another platform?
Colect explored various scenarios, including GCP and a return to on-premises infrastructure. However, a platform migration would not only be costly but would also require time and technical resources.
The challenge was therefore clear: significantly reduce cloud costs without sacrificing the flexibility and scalability of AWS.
The solution
Optimizing Where It Really Makes a Difference
SUE | CloudPhilos analyzed Colect's entire AWS environment. In just three days, the engineers identified the key opportunities for optimization.
In this regard, two areas clearly stood out:
- Databases
- Networking
For both areas, the analysis considered not only the potential for cost savings, but also the effort required and potential risks.
Based on that, the engineers from Colect and SUE | CloudPhilos worked together to develop an implementation plan.
From Analysis to Concrete Optimization
The first optimizations were implemented within a month. The database optimizations immediately resulted in savings of $6,759 per month.
The network optimizations were then implemented in phases. These changes were more complex and also required adjustments at the application level.
By specifically optimizing the AWS environment rather than migrating directly to another cloud platform, Colect was able to retain its existing infrastructure and use it much more efficiently.
"When AWS referred SUE | CloudPhilos to us, I was very skeptical. After meeting Mo and Robin for the first time at our offices, that changed completely. Their expertise in AWS was nothing short of amazing."
The result
Lower costs. Better performance. The same cloud.
The optimizations had a direct impact on both the platform's costs and performance.
Monthly AWS costs were reduced by more than $10,400, for a total reduction of 43%. At the same time, performance improved by about 20%.
This meant that Colect did not have to compromise on the benefits of AWS and was able to avoid a potentially costly cloud migration.
The results at a glance
-
43% lower monthly AWS costs
-
More than $10,400 in savings per month
-
Approximately 20% better performance
-
$6,759 in immediate monthly savings from database optimizations
-
No need to migrate to another cloud platform

Making the Most of Existing AWS Infrastructure
Getting the Most Out of AWS
The Colect case study shows that high cloud costs do not automatically mean that an organization has to switch cloud platforms.
By combining in-depth technical knowledge with an understanding of cloud economics, SUE identified opportunities for significant improvement within the existing AWS environment.
As a result, Colect was able to continue growing on AWS, with an infrastructure that is not only significantly cheaper but also performs better.
Getting more out of your cloud doesn't always start with migration. Sometimes it starts with better understanding what you already have.
