The Transformative Impact of Large Language Models on Question-Answering in NLP

Be sure to check out our whitepaper about Embracing the Power of Transformer Models: Revolutionizing Question-Answering in NLP. The emergence of transformer models, particularly the colossal Large Language Models (LLMs) with billions of parameters, has ushered in a new era in natural language processing (NLP). These large language models have achieved remarkable milestones in question-answering (QA) tasks, offering more convincing and human-like language responses. However, despite these strides, assessing the reliability of QA systems remains a formidable challenge. The intricate nature of language and the wide array of question types further complicate this endeavor. Adding to the complexity are data privacy concerns stemming from proprietary LLMs like ChatGPT, which have ignited discussions about the necessity of decentralized and open-source alternatives.

NLP Model Assessments and Open-Source Transformer Techniques

In response to these concerns, our research endeavors to shed light on the efficiency of various open-source transformer techniques in the context of practical QA. We assess the performance of these models against ChatGPT3.5-turbo, employing a unique approach. This involves the creation and labeling of a custom evaluation dataset, specifically focused on the cloud computing domain, particularly Kubernetes technology. We introduce a novel evaluation metric, the Machine-Trained Evaluation Score (MTES) known as Estimated Human Label (EHL).

Key Findings

Our findings reveal compelling insights. Among the open-source models studied, the GPT4All model, when combined with optimal input, competes closely with ChatGPT3.5 in handling code commands and situational questions, surpassing a 2.5 EHL score in both scenarios. Furthermore, our research uncovers that increasing the input context size proves beneficial primarily for Flan-T5 and does not consistently enhance the performance of other models. These revelations underscore the effectiveness of open-source models in QA tasks, contributing significantly to the evolution and comprehension of such systems.
