Streamlining Research with AWS: KNMI’s Leap to the Cloud

Customer Story

The Challenge & Business Impact

For decades, KNMI relied on traditional workstations to analyze vast amounts of data and produce weather forecasts. However, maintaining and upgrading this physical hardware posed significant challenges. The infrastructure limited their ability to scale, hindering flexibility and slowing down critical research tasks. Recognizing the need for change, KNMI turned to SUE for a cloud-based solution that could address these limitations and position the organization for future growth.

Results & Business Value

With SUE’s guidance, KNMI successfully modernized its research environment by adopting AWS cloud solutions. The implementation began with a Proof of Concept (POC), simulating their existing environment within the cloud. Using AWS CloudFormation scripts, KNMI was able to deploy and scale virtual workstations on demand, eliminating the need for upfront hardware investments.

The move to AWS delivered immediate and far-reaching benefits. Researchers gained flexible access to powerful machine learning tools and computational resources, enabling faster and more efficient workflows. The cloud environment also provided high availability, ensuring uninterrupted operations even during infrastructure failures.

KNMI now operates with greater agility, scaling resources as needed to meet research demands without the constraints of physical hardware. This transformation has not only improved efficiency but also positioned KNMI to continue leading in weather and climate research well into the future.
